Toxicity: Not toxic. Compounds are not toxic. Sodium hydroxide and sodium salts of weak acids (which, on hydrolysis, behave as alkalis) attack the skin.
Summary: Sodium is not found as the free element in Nature. Sodium floats on water and reacts violently with it, possibly igniting. It reacts with water to form hydrogen gas (H 2 ) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The most common compound of sodium is sodium chloride, NaCl, common table salt.
